Francisco Cervantes was all-alone when he scored the first points of the Section 6AA championship game.

The Melrose Dutchmen unbeaten string and their season ended in a 74-67 loss to St. Cloud Cathedral Friday night in the 6AA Championship. Melrose was led by Dillon Haider who scored 33 points in his last game for Melrose. Brady Birch, also a senior, scored 11 points.  Melrose rallied from an eight point deficit early in the second half and cut the lead to one point, but never regained the lead. Cathedral hit  four free throws in the final minute to  seal the win.

Melrose is the 2017 6AA West Sub-Section Champion.

Melrose Dutchmen Basketball

The Melrose Dutchmen earned the 6AA West Sub-Section championship with a 70-55 win over Sauk Centre Tuesday night. A tight defense gave Melrose a 26-16 half-time lead. Dillon Haider, who finished with 21 points, scored 13 in the first half. He put Melrose up by 10 with a three-point shot at the buzzer.  Francisco Cervantes, who did not score in the first half, had 14 points in the second half as Melrose built, for a time to a 20-point lead.  Brady Birch played a strong inside game collection 10 rebounds and 14 points for Melrose. The Dutchmen next play Friday night against Cathedral for the Section 6AA championship and the right to go to state.

Dillon Haider drove against the Osakis defense scoring eight points. While Osakis kept Melrose’s outside shooting to a minimum, Haider had two free throws at the end of the game to provide the winning margin.

Melrose (28-0) survived a scare from Osakis (21-7) to win 51-50 Saturday in the Section 6AA West Sub-Section semi-finals.  A strong Osakis defense, which did not allow a three-point shot, combined with cold Melrose shoot, kept the game close. Melrose took a 22-21 lead into halftime. In the second half it had a strong inside game from Reegan Nelson and Brady Birch as it built to 10-point lead. Osakis came back to take a 42-41 lead before Melrose went on another run.  In the final minute Francisco Cervantes and Dillon Haider combined to drop in four free throws and keep Melrose ahead. Osakis scored at the buzzer to create the final score. Melrose faces Sauk Centre Tuesday night at 8 p.m. at Collegeville. Sauk Centre (21-6) defeated Holdingford (23-5) 65-34. In the games in the East Sub-Section Cathedral (24-4) defeated Foley (12-15) 66-44 and Pine City (22-6) defeated Milaca (15-11) 60-57.

Jordan Klaphake (21) scored three points for Melrose and Justin Middendorf added nine more as the Dutchmen downed Long Prairie-Grey Eagle in the first round of the playoffs.

The number one-seeded and undefeated Melrose Dutchmen began their post season play Thursday, March 9 with a dominating 88-51 win over number eight seed LPGE at Melrose. Melrose had a 34-20 lead at half time and quickly expanded on it the second half. At one point they had a 73-36 lead.   Dillon Haider lead the team with 19 points. He suffered an ankle injury at the end of the first half and did not play in the second half.  He was walking after the game.  Other picked up the pace for the Dutchmen as Brady  Birch scored 13, Francisco Cervantes 11, and Hunter Rieland and Reegan Nelson 10 points. Melrose next plays Saturday at 4:30 against number four ranked Osakis at Collegeville.

M-SC Swimming

Kenny Warzecha earned seventh in the 50FS and fifth in the 100FLY in the state Class A meet.

He was the only member of the team to compete in the championship round.

Other finishes by the team were

200MR: 9-Schreiner, Dylan Fleischhacker, Warzecha, Spencer Van Beck (They won the consolation heat).

100BK: 12-Schreiner.

400FSR: 11-Warzecha, Nathan Douvier, Van Beck, Schreiner.

Dutchmen Basketball

The Melrose Dutchmen ended their regular season with a 68-50 mark giving them an unbeaten regular season.  Dillon Haider, 19 points,  Brady Birch 18 points, Reegan Nelson 14 points led Melrose.

SC-M wrestling

Wrestlingback Results

Winter defeated Kallen Schauer of Grand Rapids 5-1 in the wrestlebacks. He faces Jack Vaselaar of Winona-Winona Cotter in the second round of wrestlebacks.

Quarterfinal Results

The season ended for Antonio Ortiz, 106,   after Kole Krause was defeated 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

Jordan Winter, 132 was sent to the wrestlebacks after falling 8-1 to Tyler Shackle in the quarterfinals. 

First Round Results

Both Antonio Ortiz, 106, and Jordan Winter faced opponents from Bloomington Kennedy in the first round.
