Melrose High School Sports


Luke Glaeser earned a win in the 152 division as SCM defeated Benson.

It was good night for Melrose home teams as the Dutchmen posted a 69-52 win over Minnewaska and the SCM wrestling team topped Benson 41-27.

The basketball team was led by Franciso Cervantes and Justin Middendorf. Both had 13 points. Zac Van Beck followed with 10 points.

The wrestlers had pins from Lazaro Garcia, Antonio Ortiz and Roberto Raya in earning their win.

The Lady Dutchmen gymnasts posted a 146.2-134.4 win at New London.

Otherr road matches did not turn out as well.  The Melrose Sauk Centre Fusion swim team fell 107-77 at Alexandria. Kenny Warzecha had firsts in the 50FS and 100FLY.

The Prairie Centre North Stars fell 7-1 at Little Falls.

Shed fire at Spring Hill


Thick smoke blew across the road as firemen worked to put out the shed fire.

On Dec. 13, 2016 at approximately 10:42 a.m. the Stearns County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call reporting that a shed and tractor were on fire at the address of 34901 Co. Rd. 14 just west of Spring Hill, MN, according to a report from the Stearns County Sheriff;s Department.Stearns County Deputies along with Elrosa Fire Department, Lake Henry Fire Department, and Paynesville Ambulance responded. When Deputies arrived the shed was fully engulfed. Elrosa Fire and Lake Henry fire worked to extinguish the fire. One firefighter was treated for a laceration to the hand that occurred while at the fire. Cause of the fire is unknown at this time. The building including 4 tractors and numerous other farm implements are believed to be a total loss.

Sauk Centre-Melrose Wrestling


Bryce Stalboerger recorded two pins as SCM won the Osakis triangular.

SCM’s wrestlers came through when needed scored a 57-24 win over Holdingford and a 43-27 win over Osakis at the Osakis  Triangular Friday.  Bryce Stalboerger’ two pins paced SCM.  Also posting two wins were Lazaro Garcia. Others also came out of the triangular unbeaten, but some were by forfeits.

Melrose High School Sports

SC-M moved to 2-1 in dual meets defeating BOLD 53-18 and falling to Pipestone 49-19 on Thursday.

Larazo Garcia and Bryce Stalboerger both finished 2-0 on the night. Garcia had one pin and Stalboerger two pins. SCM had six pins in the match.

In boys basketball Melrose won 74-50 to move to 2-0 on the year. Dillon Haider led the team with 19 points.

The Melrose-Sauk Centre Fusion swimmers were edged by Sartell-St. Stephen 113-68. The Sabres dominated the meet having the best times in all events. There were was close race in the 50FS where Kenny Warzecha earned second place.  Isaac Schreiner also had good race taking second in the 100FS.

Melrose Dutchmen Basketball


Reegan Nelson drove against the Sartell-St. Stephen defense to score six points as Melrose topped the Sabres.

A good defense, and a variety of shooters enabled Melrose to win 63-41 over Sartell-St. Stephen in boys’ basketball Tuesday night.  Melrose was led by  Dillon Haider who had 17 points, but eighth other Dutchmen scored in the game. Haider, Traeton Kaeveny, Will Stone, Nathan Budde, Damon Van Beck and Francisco Cervantes all had three point goals. In other contests the Lady Dutchmen basketball team posted a 58-38 win over Paynesville and the SC-M wrestler came home with a 32-27 win over ACGC.

Sauk Centre-Melrose Wrestling


Carter Braun’s persistence paid off as he finished in third place at the Sauk Centre-Melrose Earlybird on Friday.

Sauk Centre-Melrose advanced four people into the championship round of the Sauk Centre-Melrose Earlybird Friday. Jordan Winter, 132, earned first while Bryce Stalboerger (182), Roberta Raya, 195, and Sam Sjogren finished second. Sjogren’s match concluded the evening going to the fourth overtime before it was decided. Also falling in a close over time match was Luke Glasener (152), who took fourth place. Carter Braun (126) had a come from behind win to earn third place.  Lazaro Garcia, 106, also earned third place. In girls' basketball the Lady Dutchmen fell 44-36 to LPGE on Friday.

Melrose Gymnastics


Assistant coach Jeremy Berscheit looked on as Mady Brinkman launched herself into the vault routine.

The glory the Lady Dutchmen’s past could be seen on the banners and future gymnasts watched Kayla Austing’s first place floor routine Thursday night at Melrose. The Lady Dutchmen won the meet scoring 143.975 and taking the top  two events in every routine. More information will be in the Dec. 7  issue of the Melrose Beacon.
